Assessments and Evaluations
Creating formative and summative assessment and evaluation scenarios
Formative Assessment: A method of continuously measuring a learner’s understanding throughout a course with feedback and room for improvement
Scenario 1
A self quiz at the end of each topic’s learning materials; a lesson or module may have 2 to 3 of these self quizzes depending on number of topics covered
Reason: To allow student to assess understanding of material s/he just read or watched or listened to, and to check if student is on path to meet objectives for the lesson or if remediation is needed before moving on.
Summative Assessment: A measurement of a learner’s ability to recall, apply and synthesize information in a collective manner, usually in the form of exams and projects
Scenario 2
An exhibition proposal that offers a description of the theme, artist(s), or historical coverage, purpose behind the exhibition, and a list of artist(s) and works that will be included and why
Reason: To have a project that will entail application of concepts learned throughout the course, require application of concepts, and involve critical thinking and interpretation to meet course objectives.
Formative Evaluation: The monitoring of a course in terms of its effectiveness in a continuously manner to allow for immediate intervention to clarify or aid learners in meeting objectives
Scenario 3
A question-and-answer discussion board for each week’s lesson
Reason: To give students a space to pose any questions or feedback they may have about a reading, concept, or assignment for the week’s lesson, and to allow instructor to adjust assignment and resources as needed.
Summative Evaluation: The overall outcome of a course and its instruction in terms of its effectiveness in helping learners meet objectives
Scenario 4
A course evaluation at the end
Reason: To gather feedback at the end of the course from students (anonymously) about the usefulness of learning materials, relevancy of assignments, and any areas for improvement in prep for next time course is offered.
Formative Assessment
Scenario 5
Small hands-on studio projects (such as creating a drawing or a collage for upload) tied to the vocabulary of art, which is discussed in the first lesson as part of introduction to the course.
Reason: Tasks appearing throughout lesson 1 only that measure a student’s understanding of the vocabulary of art, which is important to learn in order to be able to complete summative assessments successfully.)
