Planning a MoMA visit: 4 ways to look at art.
Purpose
What is modern art? By analyzing MoMA’s data (and keeping in mind its mission statement), I’d like to present an introduction to modern art through the artists, time periods, materials, etc. represented in the museum’s collection and offer ways of looking at or exploring a museum’s collection. For example, visitors can explore works across time, across media, across cultures, and across artists.
Some key insights from an initial analysis of the dataset (View this Tableau Story for details.)
Storyboards, Sketches, and Iterations
For one idea, I wanted to create a pamphlet as a quick guide to MoMA’s collection. One visualization would present a view of artists.
A second visualization for the pamphlet.
A third visualization to include in the pamphlet.
In a second idea, I thought about presenting an infographic with an interactive, clickable floor plan to plan a MoMA visit.

In a third idea, I thought about presenting a short visual essay to discuss modern art using MoMA’s collection. Here is a line chart to show the span of modernism in the visual arts.
As part of the essay, I wanted to also include an interactive element to show artists of the modern era and the types of work they create.
The digital mockup shows a visual essay that combines ideas from the three hand-drawn sketches. Then, I considered using a Tableau dashboard version to present the essay and a Tableau story version. To include some custom interactive graphics, I went with a different route for my final piece. Typography, color palette, and basic chart models for this piece are captured in this document.
