Does investment impact educational attainment?
Purpose
To explore and gain some insight into global education by looking at trends globally and regionally and comparing year-to-year data.
Main questions:
Where are there significant changes (increase/decrease) in investment?
Does that investment impact educational attainment?
Other questions to explore:
At a glance, which regions of the world have high/low investment in education?
Which regions have the highest/lowest mean years of schooling?
Sketches and Iterations
1. Started by creating a few hand sketches.
3. After some additional data clean up, created additional sketches that removed 2019 and 2020 since data is unavailable for most countries. Also omitted countries that have unavailable data for most years (less than 2 years of data between 2014 and 2019).
2. Adapted the heatmap one, created for educational attainment (mean years of schooling), to accommodate government expenditures. Considered a choropleth and bubble map.
4. Considered posing this question with the final visualization: Why is data about these two aspects of education (government expenditure and mean years of schooling) unavailable for so many nations including the United States?
5. A digital mockup that added an overall average of expenditures and mean years of schooling from year to year across regions.
